Ten U.S. senators, all Democrats, are urging congressional leaders to include small, state-legal marijuana businesses and related companies in future COVID-19 federal financial relief packages.
Their letter follows a similar one last week signed by nearly three dozen members of the House of Representatives.
Since Marijuana remains a Class A illegal drug on a federal level, any businesses involved it its sale or production are eligible for pandemic economic stimulus aid.
To change that, cannabis industry officials are trying to get marijuana-related companies included in all future recovery packages.
Democrats in particular are advocating for the legal cannabis industry. Some 33 states now have either legalized medical marijuana or adult-use recreational marijuana. Adult-use cannabis was legalized in Michigan on Dec. 1, 2019. Medical Marijuana has been legal in Michigan for nearly a decade.
