Three Michigan-based, cannabis-themed podcasts have been included in a list of the best industry podcasts from 2020. Industry news source CelebStoner recognized the shows in an article published in early January of 2021. The listing included several dozen shows of note from the past year; there are hundreds and hundreds of podcasts about cannabis, or potcasts, being broadcast every week in the USA.
The three shows are:
- Jazz Cabbage Café- hosted by Jamie Lowell and Rick Thompson, the broadcast features news, humor and culture discussions focused on Michigan’s cannabis community.
- Smokin’ Rope Podcast- hosted by Ryan Basore, Tom Beller and Kevin Pybus, the MMFLA/MRTMA-centric broadcast offers an insight into the workings of Michigan’s cannabis business industry.
- Benzinga Cannabis Hour- hosted by Elliot Lane and Javier Haase, this broadcast is focused on the national/international business of cannabis, including the stock market, mergers and acquisitions, and IPO news.
“This is very exciting,” said Lowell. “It’s good to have your work recognized for excellence.”
All three broadcasts take place remotely, with each participant streaming from the safety of their individual homes or businesses. Benzinga and Jazz Cabbage Café are Detroit-based shows. Smokin’ Rope is based out of Lansing.
Benzinga is well-known as a business information portal serving more than just the cannabis industry. The company website offers a stock ticker, breaking news and a staff of reporters serving up cutting-edge data for the benefit of investors and C-suite players.
Smokin’ Rope features cannabis business owners Basore (Redemption Cannabis/Foundation), Beller (RealLeaf Solutions) and Pybus (Truu Cannabis). Their interviews are born from their real-world experiences trying to operate state-based businesses in an industry which remains federally illegal. It launched in 2020.
Jazz Cabbage Cafe is the oldest of the three podcasts. In its fifth season of broadcasting, hosts Lowell (The Botanical Company) and Thompson (NORML of Michigan) have a dozen years each of advocacy and business experience in Michigan’s cannabis marketplace. Their broadcast crew all have recognized accomplishments in advocacy or host other podcasts. Debra Young is a legendary petitioning expert; Jim Salame and Colin MacDougall launched ‘The Entheo Show’ in 2021; Shelly Smith is the hostess of ‘Reads and Weeds’; and recently Berg and Roche from ‘Medical Mondays’ have joined the podcast on an irregular basis.
Other shows featuring well-known names from American cannabis culture were included in the top podcasts listing. Hosts of note include Montel Williams, Danny Danko, Bobby Black, Sara Payan, Kyra Reed, Casper Leitch, Al Rapp, David Bienenstock and Rasta Jeff.
Michigan Marijuana Report also starting hosting a potcast last summer called Four20Post The show airs live on Wednesday from 1 to 2 pm. On-demand versions are available at Four20Post as well.
