Drivers crossing into Michigan on U.S. 23 are bombarded with billboards urging them to sample the state’s booming marijuana industry. But their options are limited until they reach Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti.

That could soon change, as elected leaders in the small city of Milan, on the border of Washtenaw and Monroe counties, look to get in on the action.

On Monday, April 25, Milan City Council voted unanimously to authorize the drafting of local rules allowing recreational and medical marijuana sales.

A majority of Milan voters voted to legalize marijuana when a statewide ballot initiative doing so passed in 2018, Nie said, but the city opted for a deliberate approach to embracing the industry and didn’t immediately open its doors to businesses.
