In the two months since the Detroit City Council passed a revised ordinance to allow recreational cannabis businesses within city limits, it has faced a referendum petition to repeal both its medical and recreational ordinance and two lawsuits from current dispensary owners.

The plaintiffs in the lawsuits, who own medical marijuana dispensaries in Detroit, say the current ordinance effectively prevents them from obtaining a recreational license to sell their products for five years, and would likely result in their demise.

Council President Pro-tempore James Tate, who spearheaded the ordinance, says it’s his job to ensure Detroiters get an opportunity to participate in this industry. He is not satisfied that most medical marijuana dispensary owners in the city aren’t longtime Detroiters.
