Gov. Whitmer has proposed in her 2024 budget $4.4 million to fund a state-owned cannabis testing lab that would take effect Oct. 1, if approved by the Michigan Legislature.
Dubbed a “reference lab,” it would audit results issued by existing marijuana safety labs to ensure accuracy, help investigate suspected illicit marijuana that enters the licensed market, determine product recalls and help create standardized lab testing methods for the industry, Cannabis Regulatory Agency Director Brian Hanna said.
Hanna estimated it will cost $2.8 million to build and equip the lab, in addition to about $1.6 million for ongoing staffing, to include five employees.
“We’re hoping to get this moving as soon as possible,” Hanna said, although he didn’t provide an estimated timeline for implementation.
