Menominee City Council voted 5-3 last Thursday to pass a law allowing unlimited marijuana licenses.

Council Members Joe Dulak, Josh Jones, Jackie Nutter, Bill Plemel and Doug Robinson voted for the ordinance. Michael DeDamos, Donna Marineau and Mayor Jean Stegeman voted against it.

The development puts a year-and-a-half debate to rest. It is a change from the original ordinance, which allowed two recreational and two medical licenses.

The reasons given for the updated ordinance have changed, Stegeman said.

“First, the justification for this change was to ‘settle the lawsuit,’ a suit we were winning and won,” she said. “Then, it was about revenue and free market. The narrative has changed each time.”

Most council members didn’t have much to say, whether they supported the ordinance or not.

“We’ve already hacked this to death,” DeDamos said.
