The Michigan Treasury Department reported Feb. 29 that 198 municipalities will receive $43.5 million from marijuana taxes collected from 737 cannabis dispensary licenses, while 71 of the state’s 83 counties will reap the same $43.5 million in cannabis taxes. The remaining 12 have opted out of allowing cannabis dispensaries.
Each eligible municipality and country will receive $59,000 for every licensed dispensary and microbusiness. A total of 269 municipalities have opted into allowing retail cannabis sales.
The $87 million collected is a 46 percent increase from the $59.5 million in tax revenue that was collected for the 2022 fiscal year.
Topping the municipality list is Detroit, with 33 recreational marijuana dispensaries. The Motor City will receive nearly $2 million in revenue collected from the 10 percent recreational marijuana excise tax. Wayne County, with a total of 59 dispensaries and microbusinesses, will get $3.5 million, the most of any county.
More than $100 million was sent to the School Aid Fund for K-12 education and another $100 million went to the Michigan Transportation Fund.
