Joe Cranmore said he strives to improve the lives of others, and that led him to open his own marijuana microbusiness in Jackson.
Five Point Farms, 744 E. South St., opened Friday, Dec. 13. The facility is the first of its kind in Jackson County because, unlike dispensaries, it grows and processes its products on site, Cranmore said.
“We’re excited; nervous you could say,” Cranmore said. “It’s been so much work, and it feels like it’s just taken forever. It’s like getting to that finish line, finally being able to welcome people in to actually see what we’ve done.”
Cranmore ventured into the cannabis industry with his family in 2012, when they worked as caregivers, growing marijuana for medical use but decided he’d like to open his own “seed-to-shelf” business.
After being approved for a microbusiness license, Cranmore is now growing and selling marijuana for recreational use. The 8,500-squar-foot facility grows a max of 150 plants, which are all trimmed, watered and cared for by hand, creating a high-quality product, he said.
“Finding fresh product is fairly difficult, and I think some of that is just due to the market being flooded for a while,” Cranmore said. “So many growers came in and they’re mass-producing cannabis, and now it sits on a shelf for a while and ends up at a store sold for cheap.”
Aside from the growing room, Five Point Farms offers a processing lab and a retail space. The microbusiness offers around seven strains of flower, homemade gummies and pre-rolls, he said, adding options could change in the future.
