City officials have denied a permit for a marijuana-themed game night at the Ann Arbor Senior Center and a local cannabis activist isn’t happy about it.

“It’s real irritating,” said Chuck Ream, who has wanted to put on an event in May called Vapes and Crepes and invite seniors 60 and up to vape cannabis, eat crepes and play bingo.

“I’ve been practicing cooking crepes,” the 78-year-old Ann Arborite said, saying he’s perfected his recipes and the event would have been a fun time for seniors, with no smoking — just vaping.

“There’s a huge population in this town that uses cannabis,” he said. “Cannabis is proven to be a social lubricant to make people smile, be happy, talk more and enjoy company.”

Derek Delacourt, the city’s community services administrator, said the city attorney’s office determined the event can’t be permitted because state law doesn’t allow consuming marijuana in public and the senior center at Burns Park is a public place.

“Based on this law and our understanding of your desired activities for the rental, we cannot allow this rental to take place at the Ann Arbor Senior Center or any other city park facility,” he wrote to Ream on Monday, Feb. 24.

Delacourt said he agrees with Ream on the potential benefits, but the city sees no legal avenue to approve the event.
