If Michigan Road Taxes Need To Be Raised, Tisdel Would Prefer User Fees

The Michigan House Finance Committee Chair could play a pivotal role in what portion, if any, of the state’s business taxes are steered toward fixing the roads. Those include the proposed 30 percent tax increase on Michigan cannabis sales as proposed by Gov. Whitmer.

If there is a move to raise business taxes, Rep. Mark TISDEL (R-Rochester) said his preference is to use consumption levies because consumers can make decisions on whether to pay the tax or not.

“It could be user fees . . .,” TIsdel said.

Make no mistake, he was not embracing any tax hikes, but as Gov. Gretchen WHITMER reiterated in her Wednesday State of the State that it would need to be part of the equation.  At this early reading, the popular wisdom is that it can’t be ruled out even though House Speaker Matt HALL (R-Richland Township) is opposed.

“I’m open to looking at what comes out of the negotiations with the Governor and the speaker,” Tisdel said.

When asked on an Off the Record panel, which can be seen at wkar.org, if a business tax hike was dead on arrival in his committee, he said no.
