Ohio Cannabis Sales Top $921 Million Since August 2024

According to the Division of Cannabis Control, between August 7 and July 12, marijuana retailers in Ohio generated $653,066,896 in adult-use sales and $268,597,078 in medical marijuana combined. That’s $921,663,974 across 12,068,699 transactions—9,068,956 from recreational customers and 2,999,743 from medical marijuana patients.

The average price per gram of marijuana flower has also fallen sharply. As of July 12, the statewide average was $6.61 per gram, down sharply from $9.40 when adult-use sales began in August 2024.

All-time marijuana sales in Ohio, including the years before legalization of adult-use, have reached $2.9 million across 28,398,481 transactions. Clearly the bulk of those sales are for medical marijuana.

Currently, there are 156 licensed dual-use dispensaries authorized to sell marijuana for both recreational and medical use.

Based on Ohio’s 10% excise tax on adult-use marijuana sales, the $653 million in recreational sales would generate approximately $65.3 million in tax revenue.

This does not include additional state and local sales taxes, which could significantly increase the total. Medical marijuana purchases are not subject to the 10 percent excise tax.
