New Buffalo Township Moves To Curb Marijuana ‘Funny Business’ — And Gets Sued

May 13, 2026 | Great Lakes Region, Michigan

Many residents say New Buffalo Township unleashed a marijuana Frankenstein — there’s too many to try and control.

Now the question now is what officials can legally do to keep it in check.

Roughly 20 shops line U.S. 12 as it cuts through the township toward Indiana. There are a total of 35 active licenses throughout the township.

More than 100 residents packed a January township meeting, many criticizing the rapid expansion of marijuana businesses in the 20-square-mile community of about 2,500 residents. That’s nearly one dispensary for every 70 people.

The “old, cranky people” are complaining about traffic congestion, litter and increased crashes, said Sam Higgin, who manages the Supergood marijuana store in New Buffalo Township.
