Cannabis was Canada’s fifth most important cash crop in 2025, according to Stats Canada figures. In Canada, cannabis crops were worth $3 billion last year, or 5.8% of total crop receipts.

Cannabis crops in 2025 were worth nearly $1 billion more than the sixth-place crop, potatoes.

In 2016, cannabis crops in Canada were worth $94.8 million and reached more than more than $2.7 billion in 2022, according to Stats Canada data.

In the Prairies, traditional grain, oilseed, and pulse production are still the most profitable crops; however, in 2025, cannabis was the number one crop by total receipts in British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland and Labrador. In Ontario and Quebec, it was the third-largest crop, according to the statistics agency. Ontario saw the largest amount of total cannabis crop receipts in 2025 (48% of national total at $1.5 billion), followed by British Columbia (22% at $666.5 million), Quebec (12%), New Brunswick (10%), and Alberta (3%).
