Detroit City Council voted Tuesday to open applications for the second of three rounds of recreational cannabis licenses.
The 7-1 vote, with Council Member Scott Benson voting no and Council Member Angela Whitfield Calloway absent, means a 30-day application period for up to 50 new marijuana operations will open in the near future.
The applications will allow for 15 adult-use retailer licenses, 15 adult-use equity retailer licenses, five microbusiness licenses, five microbusiness equity licenses, five designated consumption establishment licenses and five designated consumption establishment equity licenses. In this application round, businesses can receive a provisional license, even if they don’t have a property out of which to do business.
Applications for the second round won’t be open for at least 30 days. During that period, Humphries said, representatives of the city’s Civil Rights, Inclusion and Opportunity Department will be available to answer questions from potential applicants.
