Recreational marijuana is now available to purchase in Berkley and Southfield, which join a handful of other communities in Oakland County that allow sales of recreational cannabis.
Two cannabis companies, Lume Cannabis Co. and Dreams, said they got final approvals from the city of Southfield on Monday to open recreational cannabis dispensaries in the community. The Lume store, which was previously a medical marijuana dispensary before it closed in July 2022, reopened Tuesday.
Lume is also opening a dispensary in Berkley on Thursday, joining Quality Roots, which opened its dispensary in April. Three more dispensaries are expected to open in Berkley.
Just a few Oakland County communities allow recreational marijuana sales, and the majority of dispensaries in the county, such as those in Ferndale, Hazel Park and Madison Heights, are located near the southeast boundary of Oakland County.
The opening of Berkley and Southfield to recreational marijuana sales mark a notable expansion of access to cannabis in Oakland County, which is the second biggest county in Michigan by population.
