Approaching a Midland County home in the dead of night, six men apparently had ambitions to rob the residents of their marijuana growing operation. Things didn’t quite go according to plan.
Rather than make off with the cash crop or money, one of the six received a bullet for his troubles, courtesy the home’s owner. His five cohorts, meanwhile, found themselves jailed within hours on charges that could land them in prison for life.
The would-be-heist-turned-shooting occurred around 2:35 a.m. on Sunday, July 16, at a house in the 3200 block of West Shaffer Road in Warren Township, east of Coleman.
Via security cameras, the home’s residents saw several men in their yard, said Midland County Sheriff Myron Greene. A male resident armed himself with a pistol and went outside to confront the men, Greene said.
At least one of the trespassers was also armed with a handgun, the sheriff said.
A struggle ensued, during which the homeowner shot one of the men. The other five then scattered into nearby woods as another resident called 911.
“Caller states someone broke in,” says a dispatcher on recording from Broadcastify.com. “There’s shooting in the background. They’ve shot back, the caller, and one person has been injured.”
About two minutes later, as deputies are responding, the dispatcher advises gunshots are still being fired.
Not long after, a deputy on the scene states there are one or two people “still in the woods.”
“We’ve heard four shots, currently,” the deputy says. “One is wounded with a side injury.”
