Michigan Veterans Included In Study To See If Cannabis Could Treat PTSD

A new study wants to find out if marijuana and cannabis could be an effective treatment option for veterans who have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Many doctors state it can go undiagnosed, and that can make things even worse in the long run.

Retired Major Karl Ogilvie is from Britain. He served in the U.S. Airforce for 27 years, and then practiced as a physician’s associate for almost 30 years.

“You don’t adjust to civilian life,” Ogilvie said when asked about what it’s like for veterans to return to civilian life. “You’re still wearing your uniform, it’s just invisible because you’ve changed that much.”

Ogilvie has worked with troops on the ground, and with veterans battling post-traumatic stress disorder.

“There’s a lot of care that needs to be given to our veterans after they finish serving,” Ogilvie said.

The National Center for PTSD defines PTSD as: “A mental health problem that some people develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening or traumatic event.”

“With many veterans they have multiple issues, both physical and mental,” Ogilvie explained, going on to share some of the symptoms, which include flashbacks, headaches and chronic stomach aches.

Many veterans use cannabis to try to treat their PTSD symptoms, but the Department of Veterans Affairs doesn’t define it as an effective treatment, according to Ogilvie.
