Results of a study from the New York State Department of Health showed cannabis-related emergency department visits across Northern New York.
According to the report, Jefferson County saw 1,516 cannabis-related emergency room visits in 2023. The report tracks cannabis-related ER visits and hospital discharges between 2016 and 2024.
Across New York, emergency department visits due to cannabis jumped up over 100 percent during that time frame. The study said a factor may have been people not knowing their tolerance since legalization across the state in 2021.
During that same time frame, St. Lawrence County had 779 visits while Lewis County had 191.
