The small city bordering lakeshore tourist destination Saugatuck will have recreational marijuana dispensaries.

The Douglas City Council on Monday, Feb. 17, unanimously approved a pair of ordinances allowing recreational marijuana stores and secure transport operations in the city, according to Douglas City Manager Rich LaBombard.

The ordinances do not allow any other types of marijuana licenses, such as those for designated consumption establishments, growing operations and temporary marijuana events.

Because of the city’s size, along with zoning restrictions and buffer requirements, the only spaces likely available for recreational marijuana shops are already taken by existing medical marijuana provisioning center spaces.

The good news, though, is that those provisioning centers intend to add recreational when able, LaBombard said. The city still needs to develop its permitting process before the shops can apply to be recreational sellers.
